The meaning of Reiki Reiki is a Japanese word made of two syllables. Rei means universal or subtle; Ki means energy or life force (equivalent to Chi/Qi in Chinese traditional medicine and Prana in Indian medicine). So Reiki is a universal life energy which is channelled during a hands on healing session. The Reiki energy works to heal issues on all levels, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, bringing balance and harmony.
What to expect from a Reiki treatment The treatment can take place lying or sitting and will last around one hour. The recipient should wear comfortable clothes. The practitioner will place their hands gently on the recipient’s body, working systematically through a series of points which may include the chakra centres, relevant organs, joints, and/or the spine. The treatment generally works from head to toe on the front, then the back of the body. Each hand position will be held for one to three minutes. The recipient may feel heat, tingling or sensations of energy moving within the body, equally they may feel nothing – there is no right and wrong! Generally the experience is re-balancing, energising and grounding.
Some background information Hands on healing has been practiced by most cultures since ancient times. At the end of the nineteenth century Dr Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk, rediscovered the system of Reiki and developed the practice as it is taught today. There are a series of stages to learning Reiki and each level includes an initiation that enables the practitioner to channel Reiki effectively. Sarah has been initiated to level 3a by Natalie Matos at Harmonic Goa in India www.harmonicingoa.com.
